6. Cave Point County Park

Cave Point County Park

Cave Point County Park is a scenic location that showcases the natural beauty of Lake Michigan. The park is well known for its wave-worn Dolomite/limestone ledges, underwater caves, and stunning views of the lake. It is a popular attraction for residents and visitors alike and attracts a diverse crowd including fishermen, scuba divers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

The park features a half-mile hiking trail that runs through the forest of birch, maple and beech trees and connects to several miles of trails in the adjacent Whitefish Dunes State Park. A rocky beach extends eastward at lake level, and the area is popular for kayak tours. Visitors can explore sea caves and the scenic lakefront shoreline up close, but must launch their kayaks at an adjacent site and be cautious as weather conditions can change rapidly and the rocky shoreline can be dangerous.

Cave Point is also a spectacular location for watching storms. As waves crash against the rock formation, visitors can see and feel dramatic water spray from a safe distance. Blowholes 15 to 30 feet in from the edge, created by fractures in the dolomite, also spray water. In winter, the constant wave action forms icicles that cling to the rock formations, creating a winter wonderland. Although ungroomed, cross-country skiing is possible on the trail. However, visitors should use caution as rocks can be slippery when wet or covered with ice.
