Mount Rushmore National Monument This epic sculpture links the faces of four exalted American presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln. The Black Hills provide the back-drop for Mount Rushmore, the world's greatest mountain carving. These 60-foot high faces, 500-feet up, look out over a setting of pine, spruce, birch and aspen in the clear western air. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began drilling into the 6,200-foot mountain in 1927. Creation of the Shrine of Democracy took 14 years and cost a mere $1 million. |

(605) 343-9802 Located 17 miles south of Rapid City on US Hwy. 16. The Cosmos is the strangest location in the Black Hills. Here the world is different, topsy-turvey with nothing in its normal position (including yourself). The laws of nature seem to have gone completely beserk, especially in the old mystery cabin. But to feel the pressure of the area against you is the most unusual feature of all, a physical experience you will never forget. Balls roll uphill, no one stands straight, you can stand on the wall. Kids 11 and under free with parents. Open April to November. Summer hours: 7:00am to dusk. Off Season Hours: 9am - 5pm. |
Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns Visit the Black Hills original crystal cave and experience the feeling of what many visitors claim as "walking through a giant geode." You will be surrounded by crystal-lined floors, walls and ceilings with Dog-Tooth crystals as large as T-Rex teeth. Click
